Really can't believe this. Recently I was meant to start a mini-pupillage at Greatest Ever Barristers Chambers. I'm a student and obvs have little money. I accept I had been out the night before to a 'Rock 'til you Drop' all-nighter at Bob's Bar and hadn't had time to change, but the suit I was wearing (see my pic which I've posted on Insta) is anyway the only one I have. Really upset to be told it wasn't 'appropriate' for wearing in court. The barrister KC person I was meant to spend a day with told me to go home. So I told him to go home, but he just went into court and security told me to leave. Is that OK? I don't think so.

Dear student,
Firts of all I have never been a fan of navy blue or black which is the standard colour for courtware. What are the rules? Frankly I have no idea but I think clothing colour and style for court is more of a convention than a rule. Personally I admire your chutzpah for wearing such a brazenly garish suit that's flashier than a Belisha beacon and screams louder than my headmaster did when I accidentally set fire to the cricket pavilion at school.
Us judges are lucky since we're given flashes of colour to attach to our outfits, so for you I have considerable sympathy. More importantly, perhaps the KC was in an exceedingly boring case and as things panned out you were released from court to walk free back to Bob's for another great session. The fact Bob would have seen you approaching from several miles away I have no doubt ensured a wonderfully warm welcome.
